About the SWAM Program:
The Spring Woods At MAM (SWAM) summer jobs program employs economically at-risk, rising high school students from Spring Woods Middle School in northwest Houston. The summer of 2012 will be the seventh year of the program at MAM. Five or six incoming high school students participate in the eight week program after having successfully passed through the selection process which is jointly administered by MAM and SWMS (Spring Woods Middle School). The goals of the program are: to expose students to a safe and accepting work environment, to model appropriate job skills and behavior, to increase students’ self esteem and value by payment for work, to foster social skills through a mentoring relationship, to provide a compassionate adult sounding board and to broaden and enhance a sense of community. The students will participate in field trips to enhance their learning experience and broaden their awareness about future career opportunities. They also meet weekly with an adult mentor assigned by MAM. They gain hands on work experience in the Resale Store, Administration, English as a Second Language Classes and Emergency Services. This year a few students will have the chance to work in local businesses outside of MAM for a more varied experience. The staff, mentors and volunteers receive training and support for their work with the students and eagerly anticipate the start of the program every summer. The diverse MAM community is a safe and supportive environment for young people to learn about themselves and the world around them. Click here for more info.
